A raepin string is used in Shetland knitting when using a knitting belt (although you can use it with any needles!) once you reach a certain stage the string is bunched around the bottom of your knitting and tightened with the hand formed wooden toggle - this helps with tensioning.
Each one has a different toggle - either shape or wood shade, one will be chosen at random.
