500G cone: approximately 8'000m/8'720yds 1ply
Optic: Bleached White.
This yarn was developed with Shetland Museum and Archives as part of the Shetland Fine Lace Project. The yarn is worsted spun from the natural, undyed colours of purebred Shetland Sheep to replicate the handspun yarns used in the finest lace items of the 1800s, such as Queen Victoria's stockings and items displayed at world exhibitions. This spinning process aligns the fibres but also removes short and coarse hairs as well as any vegetable matter left in the fibres. This process creates a yarn that is extremely strong but also soft as the fibres are quite aligned and not sticking out (these tiny fibres are what makes wool ‘itch’) What makes this yarn so perfect for lace is that the worsted spinning process makes a yarn which has very good drape. This yarn was developed with Shetland Museum and Archives as part of the Shetland Fine Lace Project. This yarn on cones has also been used in knitting garments on high powered automatic knitting machines, so demonstrating how diverse these yarns are. There is also an absence of joins in knitting shawls and scarves when knitting from a cone.

Lovely wool to work with. Produced a diaphanous shawl that draped beautifully. I am fast becoming addicted to this 1ply wool!

Beautiful fine Shetland yarn, in my opinion the best you can buy for that heirloom shawl or scarf. Great value and no worries about joining the yarn if you are knitting from balls ! The optic white is perfect but would like to have a cone in every shade of Shetland sheep lol
The ladies, and gents, at Jamieson and Smith might be amused to know that we were out when our postman delivered this precious parcel and he left it in our safe place , which is our coal bunker !! No cones were harmed :).

I’m familiar with this wool and it didn’t disappoint. Excellent value for money and buying on the cone reduces the number of joins. Good stitch definition with a good bloom after dressing.
